Pittsville Police Respond to Sick Wildlife at Local Park; Health Officials Urge Caution

PITTSVILLE, MD — July 29, 2026 — On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the Pittsville Police Department responded to Pittsville Park on Railroad Avenue after receiving a report from Pittsville Public Works employees regarding a sick and diseased skunk.

Upon arriving at the park, responding officers located the skunk, which was exhibiting severe signs of illness, including walking in circles and staggering to the point of falling over. To ensure public safety, the animal was humanely euthanized and disposed of according to proper protocols.

The Wicomico County Health Department was immediately notified of the incident. Health officials advised that local agencies do not test animals suspected of rabies unless there is documented human contact, such as a bite or a scratch.

Residents are strongly reminded that there have been recent documented incidents of rabid wild animals within Wicomico County. Local authorities urge everyone to maintain a safe distance from all wildlife, as well as feral cats.

If you observe an animal behaving strangely or appearing sick, do not approach it. Please report the animal immediately to the proper authorities.
